The business basics Checklist is meant to be a little assessment of your business. You can re-use the questions of the Business Basics every now and then, to see if you're heading where you want to go with your creative BIZ.

1.

DO YOU HAVE AS MANY CLIENTS AS YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE?

Yes? Congratulations! That's really amazing!

You should think about how this might change in the future. Do you want to sell more pieces or services for the same price? Or do you want to raise prices and sell the pieces and services on a higher price point?

How do you make sure that there are new clients coming your way at all times?

No, don't worry!

Do you already have a product (a painting,..) or service? Or do you need to create one? If you already have a product, does the world know about it? How do you let the world know?

Check out the part of the BIZ-Checklist that's all about Homepages and take a look if you're doing all the things already!

2.

DO YOU HAVE SOMEONE HELPING YOU WITH ALL THE BUSINESS STUFF YOU NEED TO GET DONE?

Make sure your help is taking on as much as possible, to free up your time so you can create and work on business growth!

Ask your help what they think they could do as well! Think about what is taking you very long and isn't important in your creative process. Document tasks you want to hand over eventually, create a step by step guide or use screen captures. It's always good to be prepared when things are going great and you need to hand over the tasks, in order to get everything done.

If you're not ready to hire someone, then maybe a friend or your partner could help you do stuff you're not so good at or teach you how to do it yourself.

It could be worth investing in someone helping you if that would mean having more time to actually work with clients and do your creative work.

Think about it. You're not earning any money by doing your bookkeeping, answering mails or doing

your laundry.

If you want to get ready to hand over some tasks, make a list with the things someone else could do. Document every step of the tasks, so that if you found someone to hand it over to, you won't have to spent a lot of time training them. You can let them do their work and come back to you when they have questions!

3.

WHAT ARE YOUR BUSINESS GOALS?

IN THE NEXT SIX MONTHS:

IN THE NEXT YEAR:

IN THE NEXT THREE YEARS:

Write down your goals as detailed as possible!

You should repeat this process every 6 months! Your goals will change and you should adjust your plan accordingly. Make it a habit to check-in every month to see what you need to do to reach your goals.

Questions you should asks yourself when creating your business goals are:

What do you want to create? Who should see your work? A museum, gallery, ….?

How much money do you want to make? How do you want to make it?

What are you going to do to get attention for your creative BIZ?

What are you going to learn? Which courses do you want to follow?

What investments do you need to make, for example in materials, programs, a new computer ...? How are you going to pay for it?

Where and how are you going to network?

4.

DID YOU TELL YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS ABOUT YOUR GOALS?

Yes? Great! Keep doing this!

No?

How should they know how to support you when they don't even know what you're doing? Let your family and friends know what you're doing, tell them your plan! Keep telling them! This will keep you accountable and you will convince yourself that you're actually going to do it!

5.

DO THEY KNOW HOW THEY CAN HELP YOU?

Yes? Super! Keep telling them what you need.

No? Let them know how they can help you. Tell them how they can support you in your business, but also in the rest of your life. Maybe you have children, ask for help watching them.

Your friends and family love to support you, you just need to tell them what you need!

6.

DO YOU ASK FOR HELP?

If you need help, ask for it! Let them know what you need.

Let someone help you with simple stuff! Laundry, childcare, cooking.

If you know someone that could help with something in your business ask them. The worst thing that could happen is that they're not able to help you at that moment.

Think about what you could do to help them too!

7.

DO YOU HAVE CHILDCARE DURING WORK HOURS?

This one is obvious! ;) Get someone to help! If your not ready to give your children in the hands of a nanny or daycare, get your partner, family and friends help you!

8.

DO YOU TELL FRIENDS AND ACQUAINTANCE ABOUT YOUR CREATIVE BIZ?

Yes? Super, keep doing that!

No? Why not? Find out why you're not telling about it! If there is no reason tell them!

Like now! For real, just call them!

9.

DO YOU HAVE A BUSINESS-CARD? ARE YOU CARRYING THEM AROUND WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES? DO YOU GIVE THEM TO PEOPLE WHO SEEM TO BE INTERESTED?

This is such a crucial thing to do! Get some business-cards printed! And carry them around.

I already made contacts on the playground! If you feel hesitant about it, remember it is not about spamming people with your card. It's about genuine contact. When you're talking to someone, and you're both telling what you're doing, and they seem genuine interested, just give them your card. If it feels weird tell them your don't want to be spammy, but if they are interested you would love to give them your card.

10.

CAN YOU EXPLAIN IN THREE SHORT SENTENCES WHAT YOU'RE DOING?

Practice this! It's super normal to ask someone what they do for a living, so be prepared!

Introduce yourself, don't be afraid! If you tell them super confident about what you're doing they won't question it at all!

The more you practice the easier and more natural it gets!

11.

ARE YOU VISITING BRANCH TYPICAL EVENTS?

Yes? Super! I would love to know where your going to! Please let me know in the comments!

No? Start doing it!

Go to conferences and events! Even if you know no-one! You will get to know people! Those personal connections are really strong and can help you learn more about your industry. You will make friends and contacts!

Get started with it today and search for an event or conference, put it in you calendar and go there! And take your business-cards with you!

12.

DO YOU HAVE A STYLE GUIDE FOR YOUR BUSINESS?

If you don't have a style guide check out my post about how to create a style guide for your business!

This guide is really essential!

So you really want to have one, it will make the process to create al your visual material so much easier!

So there you have it!

I know it's a lot!

BUT LETS RECAP SHORTLY WHAT YOU'VE LEARNED AFTER DOING THIS PART OF THE BIZ CHECK:

1. You need to work on getting and keeping clients! (always, this will never stop!)

2. Get someone to help you! Prepare tasks to hand over!

3. Write down your goals! Check in with them regularly!

4. Tell your friends and family about your goals!

5. Let them know how they can help!

6. Ask for help!

7. Organize childcare!

8. Tell people about your BIZ!

9. Get Business-cards and start spreading them!

10. Prepare three sentences to introduce your BIZ!

11. Start going to events, conferences,...!

12. Create a style guide!

I know this sound like a ton of work and it probably is ;).

Just need to prioritize those tasks, start with the first thing you need to take care of and then move a long!

IT'S ALSO NOT ABOUT TAKING PERFECT ACTION, BUT ABOUT DOING SOMETHING!

So start doing and over time you will get better at it and improve!

AS I ALREADY TOLD YOU, I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHICH EVENTS AND CONFERENCES YOU'RE GOING TO ATTEND, SO PLEASE LET ME KNOW IN THE COMMENTS!!
